Rawkus: Overwatch League Professional Retires to Commit to VALORANT

Overwatch World Cup winner and Overwatch League competitor Shane “Rawkus” Flaherty officially decided to bid farewell to Overwatch franchise. He made the decision to pursue and build a career in the world of VALORANT.

History of Rawkus as Overwatch Player

The senior Overwatch professional player under Houston Outlaws‘ roster competed at the top stages for years. He became successful enough to make a lasting impression in record books by winning the 2019 Overwatch World Cup.

Rawkus led Team USA at the 2017 to 2019 Overwatch World Cup, claiming last year’s gold medal. He played much of his OWL career as part of Houston Outlaws, in which he got revealed as a member of the 2017 initial lineup.

Rawkus clarified his determination through Twitlonger, highlighting how he grew up surrounded by FPS titles like CSGO. He stated VALORANT struck him with its similarities to CSGO and ability utilization. Moreover, Rawkus shared some of his fondest memories of Overwatch and thanking his supporters during his journey. He also ensured to exchange more updates concerning his future periodically.

Rawkus is One of the Many Additions to the VALORANT Scene

The decision of Rawkus to turn to VALORANT is not surprising at all. Two other roster players, Jay “Sinatraa” Won and Corey “Corey” Nigra, withdrew from Overwatch as well to become VALORANT experts. Despite its nonexistent professional scene, the three out of seven OWWC 2019 champions still chose to give a go at Riot’s first-person shooter title.

How will the Decision of Rawkus Benefit VALORANT?

The departure and transition of Rawkus to VALORANT is a pleasant indication of how many great players and icons Blizzard succeeded in accumulating in an astoundingly short period. Although players frequently comment about the current quality of the game, appreciation of the positive stuff is essential. That applies to both VALORANT itself and its competitive environment. Rawkus is a famous figure and respected professional who was able to build a substantial audience in VALORANT, not because of his expertise in the game.
